Welcome to Nonosweeper!
Sep 11th, 2004 at 5:16pm

Hi there, fans! Grin
So what do you think of Nonosweeper, then? And is anyone ever going to get close to my time on Expert?
Post whatever you like on this forum! (As long as it's not grossly offensive - I MIGHT allow slightly offensive).

A special shout goes to Gadget for getting me a big fan base in Bulgaria! His site is at www.setcom.bg, and although I have no idea what it says (the online Bulgarian-English translator doesn't fare much better either), it's probably great! Wink

Setcom.bg is a IT news website. I'm not an owner, just news editor and one of the forum administrators Smiley

The highscore for Expert is difficult to be beaten. But when I have time I'll try Smiley

Please change the way to publish newest equal times first, because now everyone is resetting the highscore to create a new one to become first Smiley

Good point about the high scores - I'll sort it out tomorrow. Undecided
I've just this minute got a better score for Expert, but I'm not posting it in the table because I don't want to scare off any potential challengers  Grin
With a lot of practice, it's possible to beat that score by a good margin, I reckon!

Erk! Gadget, I've deleted your user name! Shocked Sorry! I'm not used to this forum software yet Embarrassed

Anyway, I've changed the "upload time" routine so that an equal score with the same name isn't updated. Someone could still get to the top by resetting scores, playing again and getting an equal score and inserting it with a different name, but if they can get that score twice they might as well go for the extra second with their own name Smiley

I like the rankings, and particularly the weighted rankings.  I'm wondering, however, if there might be a more optimal weight relationship between the levels?

Good question, Lloyd - I'm inclined to think that the answer to it is "no, there isn't," although I'm open to suggestions!
You can probably imagine what would happen if the weighted totals of the levels were worth about the same - beginner*40 or something would leave the beginner scores so volatile as to render the other ones meaningless. In my opinion, a difference of 1 second on beginner is worth about 10 seconds on expert - the real reason I chose 1, 3, 10 is because they are nice round numbers that seemed about right and still left the order of importance of the levels the same, but I think those numbers are working pretty well.
I don't think there's a more precise way to do it than simply weighting it by how important one second of improvement feels on each level, but if you have any ideas, let me know!

I've fixed a few small bugs in Nonosweeper and Nonosweeper Pro, so you can download the latest versions now.
If you have a Pro account, there is now a link on the Nonosweeper Pro page to get the latest version.

Ofer: to get on the world ranking table, you need Nonosweeper Pro (http://www.nonosweeper.com/pro.html)

Any thoughts of developing even bigger levels?

I'll see what I can do about bigger levels. The best times page is getting a bit crowded though - I might do a "special levels" section! (When I get around to it...)

Don't forget to check out my Nonograms software World of CryptoPics ( http://www.yarivh.com/cryptopics/ ) which lets you make and play huge Nonograms!

v1.22 released

Hello... As you'll see, Nonosweeper.com is changing hosting providers. Sorry about the disruption. Undecided

For this reason and various others, sometimes users' scores have failed to upload correctly, and previously there was no way to go back and try again unless you'd copied the URL before clicking "upload". In version 1.22 of both Nonosweeper and Nonosweeper Pro, the last URL uploaded will also be saved on disk (as "LastURL.txt") so that if the upload doesn't succeed, you can try again later.
Upgrade now if you want to use this feature.

Please let me know if you find any bugs on the website due to the server move...

Weightings

I'm thinking of changing the weightings slightly as 10x on beginner makes it very hard to catch up with the other levels. Mind you, a 2-second player deserves a good lead over a 3-second player, for example, so I don't want to make it too low. I suggest 8x for beginner, what does everyone think?

As some of you know, I've never been a fan of the weighted rankings. Certainly, you must be able to click VERY fast to get a 2 or even a 1 (still can't believe that) on beginner, but it's not the main skill of the game. So, I suggest a provocant weighting of 5-2-1...

Nonosweeper Tournaments!

Nonosweeper Pro users can now play tournaments! I've been working on this feature for the past few days and it's likely to still have some bugs in it, so comments and reports are very welcome. Anyway, give it a try! Grin

In reply to the suggestion of 5-2-1 weightings: although it isn't in my best interests since I'm hopeless at intermediate, I personally think a weighting of 3 times the expert score is better than 2, particularly looking at the spreads of the top scores for those two levels. The beginner weighting is a tough call though!

i have been spending hours playing nonosweeper on a daily basis since i downloaded it   8)
i think it is far too good to just charge $5.99 for registration - any chance of your adding a "donate" button to the website so people can pay extra if they really like the game  Grin

i'm still a few clicks off completing the genius level and am developing lots of strategies, but wonder just how it is someones managed to complete the beginner level in 1 second   ???
are there any cheats/easter eggs built into the game ?
not that i'd consider cheating  Roll Eyes

keep up the good work Yariv, this is TOTALLY the best game i've played on computer for many many years, probably since chuckie egg actually ( on my old beeb).  one complaint though from my husband,
he wonders what i'm doing with the weird squares game for hours on end - this is from someone who uses ms train sim  Undecided

ciao for now

best wishes

Thanks for the praise, Liz! Grin

A "donate" link sounds like a great idea (specially as I've recently paid for a new web host and a download.com listing for Nonosweeper so I've made a loss on it so far!) so I've added one at the bottom of the main and best times pages; everyone feel free to use it as often as you like!
Or use this link:
https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=info%40nonosweeper.com

Another good way to help the site is to tell all your friends about it and get them addicted too - and better still ask anyone you know with a website to link to Nonosweeper.com.
Mind you, I'm grateful to all users just for playing the game and making things more competitive  Wink

There aren't any cheats or easter eggs in the game, and I've done my best to stop people cheating/hacking so the best times table reflects the genuine records. I'd be happy to put easter eggs in though, if you want!

I can't say for sure how 1 second on beginner was achieved, but I believe it's possible, even if it requires playing the game thousands of times until the right grid comes up, e.g.:
000000
XXX000
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
XXXXXX
This can be done in 1 second, I guess.

Anyway, thanks again Liz - I hope to see you on the Genius scoreboard soon!

Oh, I almost forgot - have you tried World of CryptoPics? It has even more "weird squares" than Nonosweeper!

1) I've added points for tournament placings, so even those with little chance of winning a tournament (like me!) have something to play for.
2) I've changed the ranking weightings to 8-3-1 as I proposed before, since nobody seemed to object!

Having checked the nonosweeper best times and quickly cross-referenced it with the records for minesweeper, i can see that there are some remarkable similarities. This also leads me to the conclusion that i need to improve my technique more than anything else here, because there is no way in hell i could get less than 100 seconds on the expert level of minesweeper. Not even close. I am under the impression that my fingers are just not fast enough, but that can't be right.

So, where are the tips and hints on how to achieve good times, because my mouse is tired of taking the blame for everything here...

Hi Nonosweeper Fans,

as it becomes more and more difficult to beat the top times, I suggest a new form of ranking: For every level, a player get a "Best Average" score by adding his personal Top10 times. So, a "lucky punch" would count as much as now, because you need 10 lucky punches (which obviously aren't lucky anymore then) to have a really low Top10 Total.

Example:
Player 1 Beginner:
3+3+3+3+3+4+4+4+4+4 = 35

Player 2 Beginner:
2+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4=38

So, player 2 is listed in front of player 1 in the normal ranking, even if he obviously had one single lucky game. In contrary to him, player 1 seems to be able to finish more constantly in a low time.

Maybe, this would give some new competition to the rankings... What do you think?

Averaged rankings

I agree, particularly because it will add more competition!
What about people who have only uploaded 2 or 3 scores per level? Should those scores be averaged, or averaged but with a penalty added, or that person not included in the rankings until they have enough scores (because I think some people, especially those not near the top of the table, might not want to have to complete Expert 10 times before being ranked)?

Incidentally the Nonosweeper team is staying with his mum for Christmas & New Year so updates/replies will be slow until about Jan 10th!

Happy Christmas Nonosweepers!

Indeed, it would be better if one can be listed without having 10 games in a special level. I propose a penalty time. I'll think about a good type of penalty.

Merry Christmas!

Hi everyone. I thought it's about time that I make a post in the forum. I've started rebuilding my minesweeper site, and I put up some screenshots of my best games. They can be seen here:

http://jontrans.0catch.com

Has anyone else published nonosweeper material on their home sites? Does anyone record their games with Camtasia or a similar program? I haven't bothered doing that yet. Yesterday I improved my intermediate record from 29 to 24 seconds. Nice jump indeed. I finally managed a decent expert time too, after being "stuck" on 120 seconds for a while.

Congrats to everyone with their records. It seems to be a lot of minesweepers in the top 8)

Does anyone play intermediate unmarked? I figure that if I get "the Dreamboard" ( any nice board with some special properties, really ),  it might pay off to play without marks. Normally I mark 80-90 % on intermediate, 100 % on bigger boards. Unmarked on beginner, of course Grin

Normally, I play int with at least 95% marks. If one gets a lucky game, one can still stop marking in the end when everything is obvious.

Another thing, mainly to the address of Yariv: All those coming from minesweeper are, I think, fans of Camtasia screenvideos. Camtasia can be used for nonosweeper as well, of course, but as the size of the nonosweeper window is changing from game to game, sometimes, a part of the board is missing, sometimes, one records parts of the background. Therefore, I would appreciate a built-in video recording tool which allows to make videos of one's games "automatically". What do you think? Would that be a big effort for you?

Hi there... I flag same as Stephan I guess. Speed at the end with noflagging. At Jon: I've already started making some nice videos. I'd like putting my 78 vid on my homepage, but I don't know if there is a way via html or anything to upload something as a download link. Cause I got no knowledge in this case and only use an easy designer not supporting this function. I do not think I would upload my intervideos since there is too much strategy that can be copied in there I guess. But I got no problem in giving new fans of this game some tips in record-breaking. So happy nonosweeping to all of you. And Stephan: Enjoy being a world record genius. Sure feels good. Wink

I'll make some Nonosweeper section as well for my homepage - hopefully today so that tomorrow, everyone can read some facts about my nonosweeper career.

To those who wonder how a 63 in expert is possible: After playing that board, it's obvious that in nonosweeper (as well in MS minesweeper), there are "dreamboards" who deserve such a name on every single square. This special expert I got my 63 on didn't have a single guessing situation, but did have lots of rows, columns, and parts of the two which could be solved in one "act of going through the whole line". I'll publish the screenshot as soon as possible

The Nonosweeper Team has returned from his holiday
Reply #40 - Jan 10th, 2005 at 12:52pm

Hi all! Sorry about my recent absence. Did everyone have a good Christmas? Mine wasn't bad. Roll Eyes
I'll start doing the upgraded rankings system soon, and I'm also very nearly ready to release a new game in the same mould as Nonosweeper/Minesweeper. Cheesy

Big congratulations to Roli and Stephan (x2!) for not only getting new world records, but also for being so far ahead of even the second-placed players!  Shocked
Hope everyone else doesn't get discouraged (I already have!)

Adding an automatic video recording option looks like a lot of work (meaning that I'd have to learn how to do it first). I will add it to my list of improvements to make, but don't hold your breath...
I wonder if there's a way to trim Camtasia videos after you've made them?

I'm also very pleased that people are adding Nonosweeper info, pics and videos to their home pages - I'm making a new thread to list all of these as I think people will be interested, so please add your link and a description if you make one!

Also thanks everyone for bringing the forums to life and making Nonosweeper a success.

Happy Sweeping!

> Big congratulations to Roli and Stephan (x2!) for not only getting new world records, but also for being so far ahead of even the second-placed players!

Thank you. But don't give up. Everyone can get a good or even a dreamboard, so the records might be fast, but possibly not fast enough to stay for eternity Wink

> Adding an automatic video recording option looks like a lot of work (meaning that I'd have to learn how to do it first).

Rodrigo Camargo (see link in the minesweeper section of my HP) included an auto-recording option in his minesweeper clone. Maybe, he can give you some hints.

> I wonder if there's a way to trim Camtasia videos after you've made them?

I've already checked out that, but didn't find anything useful.

We have to thank for inventing a really GREAT game!

Yesss. I finally managed a 1 on beginner after 115 2's during the last two weeks;D Screenshot can be seen here:

http://jontrans.0catch.com/beg-1.gif

Since I don't expect to get a 0 anytime soon (or ever, really), I'll give a few hints to those that would like a better beginner time. If you play it right, it should be possible to get 3 seconds on an average board. One thing to have in mind, is that beginner is small enough that you can count on a little luck. I try to solve the boards without looking at the "vertical numbers". If the first row for example is 1-2, I assume that the 1 is next to the left edge, and the 2 is next to the right edge. Then I just have to hold down the mouse button and drag the mouse over the three squares in between.  It's only right one of six times, but when it is, you save a LOT of time. When I have solved the first row, I proceed to the second and so on.

Marking is a waste of time, of course, and you should start solving the board at once. You don't have time to consider if the board is worth playing if you want to get a 1.

BTW: Congrats to Stephan. 63 sounds like an amazing expert time. I'll check out the screenshot if you have published it yet.

Okay, since today I think I can say that I'm close to sub-20. Smiley I managed a 21, 4 x 22s and a lot of 23s today. Out of respect to Jon taking out anonymity and impossibility of the 1 in beginner I decided to put a 21 video on my hp as well. Maybe it'll help some of you. Otherwise I'm so damn angry and sad, cause I got a (the) dreamboard in beginner today and only managed a 2. Probably I missed my only chance with it. I'll upload the screenshot to my page as well. Happy sweeping...

Thanks for the comments on my 1. It's not that hard to get a 2 second game. I've managed 5 2's in three minutes. You just need to take some chances instead of "over-analyzising" both the vertical and horizontal clues.

Yep, exactly. That was my playing style before your post anyways, but it was good that you've shown me that 1s is statistically easier than I thougt. So I've been playing beginner yesterday night with the aim to stop at 1 s.  Cheesy

Congrats with your new beginner record, then. How many 2's did you get before that 1?

Thanks. Smiley Not many I have to admit. I think around 9. I got 24 right now. Doesn't come close to your statistics. And congrats to Stephan for getting a 2 at last.  Smiley

Congrats to Roland and Jon for their 1's. Roland, your 19 is awesome!

And thanks for mentioning my 2. I played hard for about one hour until I finally got that 2. My beginner statistics (2x1, 3x22) and yours have lots of parallelity, with the only (but important Sad) difference that I'm 1 second slower in general...

I think I screwed up the parallelity today, Stephan. I achieved 126 2s (135 total) in 5 days now. Around 70 of them today and even 3 waiting for the page to load. Even got another 1s.  Cheesy Screenie is on my page. Sweep it, guys...

Yes, you really did. But I stopped playing beginner immediately after getting my 2, so it's probably not really comparable...

This thread is getting a bit unwieldy, so feel free to open new threads when you like.

I've just opened a new one with an announcement about my programming activities!

I'd also like to ask Nonosweeper players to please rate the program at Download.com, link below. Thanks! Grin

It's nice that minesweepers don't completely dominate the list. This Gero seems to have improved a lot lately, and I never saw him on the minesweeper sites. Does anyone know more about him and his background (just curious).

Well, it seems that he actually has been playing minesweeper indeed. Should have checked his profile first.

Gero Wälz is a young German sweeper who has improved a lot (1-17-65 now), so he is a decent sweeper at all. He and his friends set up the B.O.M.B. minesweeper clan site where you can find a real profile as well.

So, finally, the non-sweepers are still very rare (what about Maruda?)...

@Jon: I never was on Minesweeper Sites before, becaue I wasn't able to play the Clone version. On my old PC i was slower playing the Clone instead of the Windows versions. After my friends and I started our own homepage we got in contact to other Sweepers like Elmar and Stephan and many others who (especially Elmar) encouraged me and my friend to send the times to Gregoire. So I started with pretty good times.
I started Nonosweeper in November, but never played a lot. But in the beginnig of 2005, I really got crazy on this game. Cheesy
@Stephan: My current records are 1-16-64!!!! That's a big improvement Smiley

Congrats to all recent record breakers. I've improved a little myself. Got this wonderful 21 second board on intermediate. It can be seen on my home site:

http://jontrans.0catch.com

I think I remember vaguely how I solved it. I started in the upper left corner, and cleared the first column. Then I noticed that the downmost row must have it's mines next to the edges (because the eight column has a mine on the bottom). I solved that row, and went on to solve the eight column. I think I switched to no-flagging here, and just solved the rows 1 to 7 in order. That must be close to the most efficient way of solving that board. 8)

I hope to play a little more nonosweeper in the future, but have spent a little more time on internet poker lately. Still haven't tried it with real cash, though.

To Yariv//
1.I think it would be heplful if in the "Best Times" section there is 5th subsection named "Today's"(next to best times, rankings, records history and list of users),containing a list of all daily scores, taken from the "This month" list.In this way it won't be a daily ranking but just a clearer view of the daily scores  Wink

2.Is there way(or its erased)to see the previous month(s) ranking(s)?

Nonosweeper rocks even if I do suck at it...

12-115-337 =(

I'm ok at beginner I guess and I know I could get sub 100 on intermediate.
